This is the city. Vancouver, British Columbia. The home base of Special X, the psycho-hunters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Vancouver

You are looking northwest from the downtown core. The two white peaks on the horizon are The Lions, named for their shape. In front of them is Hollyburn Mountain. West Vancouver covers its slope down to the ocean.

Lions Gate Bridge, in the center, steps across First Narrows. Sentinel Hill rises against the face of Hollyburn Mountain, between the buildings at the north end of the bridge. Dr. Gill Macbeth, the forensic pathologist, lives atop Sentinel Hill. Lions Gate Bridge is where the body thrown from the plane lands in KAMIKAZE.

The forest you see in the water is Stanley Park. Except for First Narrows, the park separates English Bay (the outer harbor, unseen to the left) from Burrard Inlet (the inner harbor, this side of the park). The white swath through the trees displays the Stanley Park Totem Poles. That's where Sid Jinks attacks Inspector Zinc Chandler in GHOUL.

Vancouver

Along the North Shore stretch three mountains. Here, again, is Hollyburn Mountain, with The Lions. To the right is Grouse Mountain. Dividing them is the Capilano River in its canyon. The river meets the sea at the far left of the photo under Lions Gate Bridge. The Capilano River separates West Vancouver from North Vancouver, which covers the slope of Grouse Mountain down to the inner harbor.

See the line of houses in the trees just up from the water on the far right of the photo? Under them is the townhouse where the romance writer is strung up in HANGMAN.

harbor

You are looking north across the harbor at Grouse Mountain. The shootout at the mountain shack in HEADHUNTER takes place up on this peak. Mosquito Creek flows down in the center of the photo. That's where Sergeant Dane Winter of North Vancouver Detachment and Inspector Zinc Chandler find the "Cyclops" victim in SWASTIKA.

Vancouver

You are looking northeast across the harbor at Seymour Mountain. The end of Grouse Mountain is to the left. Lynn Creek rushes down the valley between Grouse and Seymour. The creek is spanned by a wobbly suspension bridge. Corporal Nick Craven finds the naked body with a skinned face hanging suspended under that bridge in RIPPER.

The cluster of buildings near the water is the City of North Vancouver. Lonsdale Avenue - once a pioneer "skid road" that ran logs down to the harbor - angles left up from the middle of the red ship. Just west of Lonsdale, along the shore, is Lonsdale Quay. That's where Sergeant Dane Winter finds the "Golden Fleece" victim in the ritzy apartment tower in SWASTIKA.

A few doors up Lonsdale, on the east side, is the two-story walk-up in which Craven resides until he moves to police the Gulf Islands in BURNT BONES and DEATH'S DOOR. Nearby is the Lions Gate Hotel, where the Hanged Man is strung upside down in BED OF NAILS. The high-speed chase through the streets to the right between the Olds 442 Indy pace car and Inspector Zinc Chandler "riding bitch on a rigid" behind the outlaw biker Red Beard begins in the Lounge Lizard, the Lions Gate Hotel's pub on Lonsdale.

A block to the east off Lonsdale, higher up near the trees, is the North Vancouver Detachment of the RCMP. That's where Craven and Winter work before they cross the harbor to join Special X at HQ.
